Best Song Ever
“I am my father’s daughter, come hell or high water. Never gonna leave him. Despite the rights or wrongs. I’ve got you and I hope that you know.”
This is a beautiful and heavy song that is dripping with poetry and metaphor. I can’t listen to this song without tearing up, so I am not going to have a bunch of commentary beyond the crazy beautiful lyrics. This song give me the feels to such a deep degree. And, it has me thinking of the Little 33Forever. And how I hope he feels this song when he gets older and understands it.
There is a lot going on here. And its for sure not lost on Olivia who her father is and what it means to be his daughter. And, I think its a love song to him saying in short: I know you’re trying hard and you’re going to fuck up some times, but I still got your back.
This song connects with folks I think because it really highlights how forgiving children can be of their parents shortcomings. And it provides hope for parents who are concerned about any trauma they may create for their children.
There is a lot of great poetry in this song. How about that first line that captures a child's eye view of...well really whatever you want to make it. But its for sure a child's eye view.
"Out beyond the reaches. Rare as a blood moon. You show, then cover up your tracks. And through the thinning branches. I watched your tail lights turn. And wondered if you're ever coming back."
Then there is this line later in the song which could go alot of way.
"They asked if I had seen you. But I've got no truck with men. Like them, they can go to hell."
But, the part that gets me every time (especially that point where her voice breaks):
"There's a light, there's a light. That shines wherever you go."
"I could wash it down. I could drown it out. By filling up the silence with an organ sound. And by writing sentences I used to think were quite profound."
If you are feeling overwhelmed by a current project in your life, this song will make you feel seen and heard.
“And it feels like the weight is too much to carry. I should quit, maybe go get married. Only time will tell. And I wonder if I should have changed my accent. Tried to make myself more attractive. Only time will tell”
The “final girl” referred to in this song is the girl at the end of a thriller or horror movie. She’s the last girl left after everyone has ignored her, betrayed her, or died. It’s up to her to kill the monster and solve the problem. All the pressure is on her. And as the lyrics say
“In the final cut. In the final scene. There’s a final girl. Does she look like me? In the final cut. In the final scene. There’s a final girl. And you know that she should be screaming. Now!”
Check it out!
"Macbeth on heavy rotation. Hope dies at last and we don't care. A young girl screams death to the nation."
I haven't explored this song enough to know exactly what we're talking about here. But, I know that it grooves and there is a ton of emotion and its about as close to metal as we're going to get this year. If you aren't already familiar with Zeal and Ardor, please check them out. They are super genre bending. They have a metal feel. Lots of screaming. Some hip hop/EDM components. Lots of bass drum. Droning guitars. And, always, always, always grooving. Maybe this is just straight ahead hard rock. Regardless of genre definitions or bending, they are just awesome. I am excited to share a song of theirs as I've been a fan for a while.
Its impossible to talk about this song without talking about the music and sound. First you get some maybe record scratching and then quickly into a deep bass beat. This beat carries you through the entire song. Boom. Clap. Boom Boom Clap. Then you get chanting with the beat that goes so smoothly. What’s he say:
“Black cats showing up out of nowhere.”
Right on.
“Macbeth on heavy on rotation”
Oh?
“Hope dies at last and we don’t care. A young girl screams death to the nation.”
Well now. What’s next?
“A Greek god on the back of a stallion. Coming up a three-lane highway. Prepare for the death of a billion. Wake up at the end of my day.”
And throughout that driving beat. Let it bring you home.
“Bow down to the American way!”
Monthly New Awesomeness Playlist
"Hey kids, rock and roll. Nobody tells you where to go, baby."
There is so much good music in this playlist. I've shared a few songs from the playlist in my Best Song Ever category. Some I plan to share and haven't yet. Some songs that I haven't shared and aren't on my list to share individually:
I Don't Live Here Anymore - The War On Drugs. This is an excellent break up song.
I Hate Everything - Greet Death. Some new melancholy indie where a twentysomething begins to question their place in the world using various metaphors.
Darker than Death - Indigo De Souza. Check out this up and coming back. Their whole album is great. I'm not sure it will make it my top ten, but be sure to check it out.
Drive - Eddie Vedder. I rarely call out covers. When I do its because a new artist has found a new take on a classic song or they revive a deep cut and make it a classic. But, I am calling this out because I love this version. Eddie seems to capture the emotion going on here. Michael Stipe seems to have a detached approach to his vocals. That works a lot of the time for his material. What I love aboutu this version is that Eddie just makes it his own with the emotion and intentity throughout. There is no detachment in this song. Which is why when Eddie says, "Hey kids, rock and roll. Nobody tells you where to go, baby." God, there is so much there. Please, please, please check it out.
Under Fire - Django Django. This is just great musicalness. Not a typical song I share.
But, clearly the focus of this list is the unmistakeable brilliance of the CHVRCHES new album. I include six songs from this album alone. So good.
But the entire playlist is excellent. Like I say, so much good music out right now.
