Monthly Music Fix 2023 10
My tenth monthly installment of my new(ish) music playlist of 2023 | 10(ish) awesomely curated new songs
“I don't wanna be crying in public. But, here I am crying in public."
Welcome to my final monthly installment of newish music. A sort of hodgepodge of stuff that was either recently released or recently discovered by me.
Crying in Public - Madi Diaz
I heard this song for the first time ever when I saw Madi Diaz open for MMJ in NYC. I shed tears as I processed real time that she was talking about me and my experience. I was someone who cried about five times between the ages of 12 and 45. And then, bam, I am crying in public all the time.
"I could be walking through a grocery store at 3am. I could be almost falling in love again. You're still on the street. Every sidewalk I go down. I swear you're everywhere. You're right here right now. I don't wanna be crying in public. But, here I am, crying in public. I am strong, I am stronger than I am right now. Trying to keep it in, but its coming out. I don't wanna be crying in public. But, here I am crying in public."
What Just Happened - The Kid Laroi
I am really beginning to get into The Kid Laroi. Little 33Forever loves him and I'll probably be taking him to see him live next year. This is an excellent pop song about a relationship between friends that goes too far.
"What's your excuse?! Imma blame the drugs. I care I care. I don't care enough."
Mother Nature - MGMT
MGMT return with an excellent sounding song. This song is about starting over. Its about the painful process of deciding to start over and the equally painful process of destroying the old to make way for the new.
“I torched the fields again. And killed an honest man. Now I understand Mother Nature. Watch me running head-first into the thorns. It's like the lights are off but somebody's home.”
Hooty - T.F., Schoolboy Q
Schoolboy Q is back. I dig his vibe on this song. I love how it sounds and feels. Q just sounds excellent on this song.
“skrrt, skrrt, skrrt”
What Now - Brittany Howard
Another excellent sounding sound that makes me want to move. This is a breakup song. Brittany is offering to take the blame for the relationship failure.
“I surrender, let me go. I don't have love to give you more. You're fucking up my energy. I told the truth, so set me free.”
Killers of the Flower Moon - Charlie Crocket
This is the story that goes along with the movie, Killers of the Flower Moon. Its a classic folk song telling the story of people wrongly killed and persecuted. It reminds me quite a bit of Bob Dylan's Hurricane.
“They called him the King of the Osage Hills. He went and got everybody killed. Now they talk about the weather like it’s judgment coming soon. For the Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Heartbeats (live) - Jose Gonzalez
About a one night stand that turns into more. I love how this live version sounds.
“One night to be confused. One night to speed up truth. We had a promise, babe. Four hands and then away. Both under influence. We had divine sense. To know what to say. Mind is a razor blade.”
Positive Charge - The Gaslight Anthem
This is a great, rocking, gaslight anthem song. There is so much yearning in this song. Yearning for an old relationship. Yearning for better days.
“I wanna live, I wanna love you a little longer. I was invincible many years ago when I was so much stronger. I wanna smile like a letter from an old friend. My arms are wide as oceans. How I've missed you, and feelin' good to be alive.”
I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A "Rap" Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time - Andre 3000
Andre 3000, the same dude that brought you Hey Ya, Ms. Jackson, and B.O.B., has decided to make an entirely instrumental album full of him playing the flute and various woodwinds. Talk about a left turn. But, I suspect we'll see some folks rapping over these sounds. They actually sound great.
Dancer - IDLES, LCD Soundsystem
I love the combo here. I love the shouting and dancing.
“Dancers hip to hip, dancing cheek to cheek.”
Bonus Songs
Filled With Wonder Once Again - Jeff Tweedy
This almost feels like a Christmas song?
“And I am filled. With wonder once again.”
Constant Headache - Tigers Jaw, Joyce Manor
This is a cover? But, I dig it.
“You said such nice things about me, I felt guilty and cheap.”
Resentment - Madi Diaz
Another discovery from Madi Daiz. She was so great live. A great break up song.
“I don't hate you, babe, it's worse than that. 'Cause you hurt me and I don't react. I've been buildin' up this thing for months. Oh, resentment.”
Only One Way - The Mountain Goats
I am really digging this new album from The Mountain Goats. It has an updated classic feel to it.
“You're gonna make a bargain with the bad guys. You're gonna make some choices you regret.”
